How do I apply for a TN Visa?

There are several steps to applying for a TN visa. The order of these steps and how to complete them may vary at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you apply. Also, there are different requirements for Canadian Citizens and Mexican Citizens.

Generally, you complete the Online Visa Application, schedule you interview, gather required documentation, and attend your interview.

How long is a TN Visa valid?

The TN Visa can be obtained for as short as one (1) day and for as long as three (3) years, but it is renewable for applicants and positions that continue to meet the NAFTA requirements.

Can I work with an TN Visa?

Yes, but the TN visa does not automatically provide work authorization to the applicant’s family members.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my family travel with me to the United States?

The TD visa (TN dependent visas) does allow for a TN visa holder’s spouse and/or child to accompany them to the United States for the same amount of time as the primary applicant’s visa.

Will my family members be allowed to work while in the U.S.?

TD visa holders are not allowed to work in the United States. TD visa holders must obtain separate work authorization.

Can I get a green card based on my TN Visa?

There are a number of ways a particular TN Visa holder may qualify for permanent residence, but the TN visa itself does not lead to permanent residence.
