BUSINESS IMMIGRATION
J-1 Visa for Exchange Visitors
The J-1 Visa is issued to individuals who wish to come to the United States through an Exchange Visitor Program. This visa is offered to around 300,00 foreign individuals per year from more than 200 countries. The Exchange Visitor Program allows the visa recipients to experience work and study programs meant to immerse individuals in the American culture, strengthen their English abilities, learn new skills or build upon existing ones, which will help them in their careers.
The J-1 visa supports activities such as study, teaching, research, sharing specialized skills, and receiving on-the-job training, among others. There are fifteen categories of programs sponsored under the J-1 category. Talk to our Atlanta business immigration lawyers to find out if one of these categories fits your situation.

How do I apply for a J-1 Exchange Visitor visa?
The first step in obtaining a J-1 visa is to select a sponsored program and interview with them to determine if you qualify or not. If you qualify for the program, the sponsor will provide a DS 2019 form to be filled out. Then, the visa needs to be requested at the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence.
How long is a J-1 visa valid?
Periods of validity for a J-1 visa vary from weeks to years, depending on the program.
Can my family travel with me to the United States?
Certain programs under the J-1 visa allow for your spouse and children (unmarried and under 21 years of age) to accompany the J-1 recipient under a J-2 visa.
Will my family members be allowed to work while in the U.S.?
Yes, your family members may work while they are in the United States but they will be limited in using their income to support you.
Can I get a green card based on my J-1 Visa?
It is not possible to get a green card based on your J-1 visa. In fact, you may be required to spend two years outside the U.S. before returning after the end of your J-1 status. Still, other visa options may be available which could allow you to stay in the U.S. for a longer period of time.
